Why Do Algae and Weeds Form?

Warm weather in Florida helps in the growth of algae. Man-made lakes used for stormwater retention and pollution control contain a high level of phosphorus and nitrogen which serves perfect foil for algae and weed growth.

They are mostly formed if a water body like a lake or a pond is left unattended for a long time. Undesired aquatic weeds generally grow because of the side-effects of exotic plants and trees plantation. Reach out to Superior Waterway Services for further details regarding algae and weed growth prevention.

Signs That Help You Identify Presence of Algae and Weed

  • Algae is the cause behind the unsightly "scum" on your ponds or lakes surface.
  • Foul odors are a sign of the growth of noxious weeds.
  • Courtesy Florida Department of Environmental Protection, you also get FREE “Aquatic Plant Identification Tips” upon request.
  • Superior Waterway Services also has the provision of books to give you a rough idea about unwanted weed growth and ponds in general.

Steps to Revive the Balance of Algae in Your Lake

  • Reduce excess nutrients to avoid further problems. Use agents to bind these nutrients to improve the quality of the lake
  • Add an aeration system to add dissolved oxygen to all the levels of your lake or pond
  • Use a machine to remove the algae that forms a mat on the surface of the water
  • Use appropriate EPA-registered products to treat your lake and ensure that a well-trained, state-certified aquatic technician or biologist applies the product to the lake or pond
  • A combination of two or more of these methods can work best. It helps balance the aquatic ecosystem and increase the chances of sustaining life in the lake or pond

Some Frequently Asked Questions

  • How Can I Get Rid of Weeds in My Pond?

You can send us a sample and we will identify the specific weed or you can directly call us to get an aquatic survey. Depending on what type of weed it is, we will be able to provide a suitable solution for you.

  • Will the Treatments Harm Fish and Wildlife?

We follow certain precautions before application of the herbicides or algaecides such as measuring oxygen prior to treatments, running the water pH, determining temperature, and measuring the hardness of water before using any copper-based products. Furthermore, the products we use are EPA-approved and won’t cause any damage if used as directed by the product label.

  • How Long Does It Take to Get Results?

While algae treatments start showing results in 3-10 days, aquatic weed herbicides like Reward, Aquathol Super K, or Nautique produce an effect within 1-2 weeks. Relatively slower agents like Sonar take 4-8 weeks to achieve results. These results will sometimes be effective for one year or longer.

  • What Happens to the Treated Weeds and Algae?

As aquatic weeds are almost entirely made up of water, little residue remains after they decompose. In those rare cases which take longer, we have the provision of cutters to remove the dead weeds.

  • Will Treatments Control the Mosquitoes?

The treatments won’t directly control the mosquitoes as they are designed to be nontoxic to most things. But we do offer a supplemental program to control mosquito and midge larvae.

  • Would a Fountain or Aerator Help Control Algae and Weeds?

A fountain or aerator does not necessarily prevent weed and algae growth. However, a surface aerator improves the look and provides biological effectiveness. Our team recommends a fountain to enhance aesthetics too. Get in touch with us to learn about our installation services.

  • Will Treatments Make My Pond Safe for Swimming?

The treatments are specifically to control weed and algae growth, they don’t make the water germ-free. Superior Waterway Services offers periodical testing of water for bacteria when you opt for our water management program.
